Cinnamon Chip Bread

Cinnamon bread is a classic that so many of us know and love. From eating it topped with a little butter to toasting it, using it for breakfast sandwiches, or even making a cinnamon-infused French toast variation, this is a bread that's found in so many homes and recipes.

What makes this cinnamon chip bread unique is the addition of cinnamon chips to the cinnamon swirl, which adds more cinnamon flavor and sweetness to every bite. It's an easy addition that adds lots of flavor to the bread without a lot of work.

Why You'll Love This Cinnamon Chip Bread

Cinnamon bread is nothing more than a simple, homemade bread recipe with a cinnamon swirl added to it. The bread is mixed, proofed, and rolled out. Then, the cinnamon filling is added, and the bread is rolled back up to make the swirl.

  • Limited Ingredients: This bread only uses a handful of kitchen staples.

  • Kid-Friendly: The sweetness of the cinnamon chip swirl combined with the soft texture of the bread makes this a recipe kids will love.

Cinnamon Chip Bread Ingredients

This recipe uses basic baking staples, and most if not all of them could be in your kitchen right now. All the ingredients needed to make this cinnamon swirl bread recipe are listed here, but you can find their exact amounts in the recipe card at the end of the post.

  • Warm Water, Sugar, and Yeast: Warm water activates the yeast used to make the bread rise, and sugar feeds the yeast so it can do its job. The rest of the sugar used in the dough adds sweetness.
  • All-Purpose Flour: All-purpose flour is the base for this bread.
  • Vegetable or Canola Oil: Oil provides the fat needed to create the bread's texture.
  • Cinnamon Chips and Cinnamon: Cinnamon chips and cinnamon create the cinnamon swirl that gives this recipe its delicious flavor.

How to Make This Cinnamon Swirl Bread Recipe

This sweet cinnamon swirl bread recipe only takes a few simple steps and a little time to let the dough rise. After that, you'll simply bake it and enjoy. You'll find the recipe highlights below, but be sure to check the recipe card at the end of the post for the full instructions.

  1. Activate the Yeast: Mix the water, yeast, and some of the sugar and let the mixture sit until it forms bubbles.
  2. Mix the Dough: Combine the yeast mixture and the remaining dough ingredients, mixing until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  3. Proof the Dough: Spray a piece of plastic wrap lightly with cooking spray and place it over the bowl. Let the dough proof until doubled in size.
  4. Roll Out the Dough: Roll out half the dough into a rectangle that's as wide as the bread pans.
  5. Make a Cinnamon Loaf: Top the rolled-out dough with half the cinnamon mixture and roll it up. Place in a greased bread pan. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the other loaf.
  6. Proof the Loaves: Cover the bread pans with plastic wrap sprayed with cooking spray and let the dough proof until it's about an inch higher than the pans.
  7. Bake: Bake the bread until slightly golden. Cool until warm and enjoy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cinnamon chip bread?

Cinnamon chip bread is a variation of cinnamon swirl bread, a soft, white sandwich bread with a cinnamon swirl throughout.

How do you know if yeast is good?

You should always use fresh yeast when baking. If your yeast is old but not too old, mix it with the amount of warm water called for in the recipe and let it sit for 10 minutes. If the yeast gives off a bready aroma, it's still good. If not, it's gone bad.

Why was my bread so dense?

Dense bread is often the result of using too much flour. To measure flour properly for baking, gently spoon the flour into your measuring cup and level it off with a knife. This ensures accurate flour measurement without compacting.

Where is the best place to let dough rise?

Any warm spot in your kitchen will work. However, if you have a cool kitchen or it's winter, place your bowl in the oven along with a cup of very hot water and leave the oven light on. This creates a humid, slightly warm environment perfect for proofing bread.

Serve With

Enjoy this bread fresh or toasted with some butter for a classic cinnamon bread treat. You can also pair it with other breakfast or snack favorites like:

  • Breakfast: Add a sweet touch to a breakfast with sausage and egg muffins or a hearty hashbrown breakfast casserole. You can also make a sweeter version of breakfast sandwiches.
  • Desserts: The cinnamon flavor of this bread is perfect with dessert items like vanilla ice cream or fruit competes and sauces.
  • Dinners: Believe it or not, the cinnamon in this bread pairs well with deeply savory flavors like the kind you'll find in these skillet chicken thighs or even beef recipes.

Storage

Enjoy this cinnamon swirl bread recipe for a few days, or store the loaves for future use. You can store the bread at room temperature for a few days or freeze it. Avoid refrigerating it, however.

Room Temperature: Store for up to four days in an air-tight container.

Freezing: Wrap the bread tightly in a double layer of plastic wrap, then a layer of foil. Store for up to 3 months. Leave the bread on the counter to defrost.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 tbsp yeast
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 4½-5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp vegetable or canola oil
  • 1 cup cinnamon chips
  • 3 tbsp cinnamon

Instructions

  • Add yeast and 1 tbsp of granulated sugar to 2 cups of warm water. Let sit for 5-10 minutes or until the mixture forms bubbles on top.
  • In a large mixing bowl, mix together granulated sugar, vegetable oil, and yeast mixture. Slowly add all-purpose flour, 1 cup at a time, until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  • Place the dough into a lightly greased glass bowl. Spray a thin layer of cooking spray onto a piece of plastic wrap and place it over the top of the bowl. Let the dough rise until it doubles in size.
  • Spray 2 4x8 bread pans with cooking spray and set aside.
  • Once the dough has doubled in size, place half of it on a lightly floured flat surface. Gently flatten out the dough to the same length as your bread pan. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon and cinnamon chips on top. Carefully roll the dough up and place it in your greased bread pan. Repeat this step for the other half of the dough. Cover both loaves with plastic wrap that has been sprayed with cooking spray.
  • Preheat your over to 350℉.
  • Let the dough rise until it is about 1 inch higher than the bread pans.
  • Remove the plastic wrap and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the bread has a slight golden brown color to it. Remove the bread from the oven and let sit for 10 minutes before removing from the pan.
  • Serve and ENJOY!

Notes

Storage:

This cinnamon swirl bread lasts 3-4 days at room temperature in an airtight container or bag. You can also freeze it, and it will last for up to 3 months. Thaw it overnight in the refrigerator when you are ready to use it.

Tips:

  • Your bread will rise the best when you combine the yeast with warm water. The ideal temperature is between 105 and 115 degrees F. Yeast is a living thing; you don't want to kill it with hot water.
  • You can find cinnamon chips online at stores like Amazon, or you can also find them at specialty grocery stores.
  • For a fun twist, add ½ cup of raisins. Add them in when you are sprinkling the cinnamon chips and cinnamon over the rolled out dough.
