Cool Whip Cookie Ingredients
- Boxed Cake Mix: All the dry ingredients you need to give your cookies their texture and structure, flavor, and sweetness without any need to measure! You can use any cake mix flavor you enjoy to make these cookies.
- Cool Whip: This non-dairy whipped topping plays a crucial role by adding moisture, fat, and a fluffy texture to the cookies, resulting in their soft and tender texture and taste. You can't substitute this ingredient with traditional whipped cream. Make sure to thaw it out in advance!
- Egg: Our binding agent holding the cookie dough together and contributing to the structure and texture of the cookies.
- Powdered Sugar: Used for rolling the cookie balls, adding sweetness and a powdered finish to the cookies, enhancing their flavor and appearance.
Variations + Flavor Combinations
- Brownie Mix: Substitute the cake mix with a brownie mix for an ultra fudgy cookie.
- Add Toppings: Add sprinkles, crushed nuts, or chocolate chips to the cookie dough balls before baking for extra texture and flavor. For best results, add the toppings after you roll the dough balls in the powdered sugar.
- Funfetti: For the ultimate sprinkle fest! Add more sprinkles on top too!
- Red Velvet: The perfect variation for Valentine's Day or Christmas inspired cookies.
- Chocolate: Use Devil's Food Cake mix or another chocolate cake mix flavor to make chocolate cake mix cookies.
- Vanilla: Stick to a classic vanilla cake mix for a timeless flavor profile that pairs perfectly with Cool Whip.
- Lemon or Strawberry: Use lemon cake mix to infuse a zesty and refreshing twist into your cookies with a pale yellow color. We love the strawberry cake mix for a fruity light pink cookies. These two work great for spring or Easter events.
- Fall Inspired: Use a spice cake mix to add warm and cozy flavors, perfect for the fall season.
How To Make Cool Whip Cookies with Cake Mix
- Step 1: Prepare for baking. Before you get started, preheat your oven to 350℉ and line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.
- Step 2: Assemble the cookie dough. Add the cake mix, Cool Whip, and eggs to a mixing bowl. Mix with a spatula until the mixture forms a soft dough. Avoid over-mixing!
- Step 3: Coat with sugar. Use a 1 ½ inch cookie scoop to make cookie dough balls. Roll the cookie dough in the powdered sugar until completed coated.
- Bake and cool. Place the cookies 2-3 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 12-14 minutes or until the cookies are slightly brown around the edges. Cool on a wire rack completely before serving.
Expert Tips
- Space the Cookies. Give the Cool Whip cake mix cookie dough balls at least 2½-3 inches of room between each one. This prevents them from spreading into each other while baking.
- Cookie Doneness. Watch for a slight golden brown color around the edges of the cookies. This is an indication your cookies are ready to be taken out of the oven.
- Line Your Pan. Lining your baking sheets with parchment paper prevents sticking and makes cleanup easier.
- Keep Them Round. Handle the cookies gently after scooping, so they keep their round shape.
- Cool Properly. Allow the cookies to cool on a wire rack after baking to ensure they set properly. They will firm up a bit as the cool but keep their soft, chewy texture. Removing them from the pan too early may cause them to fall apart.
Storing & Freezing
- Storing: Keep the cooled cake mix and Cool Whip cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3-4 days to maintain freshness. You can also freeze baked cookies for up to three months.
- Freeze Cookie Dough Balls: Mix the dough and skip the powdered sugar. Arrange the cookie balls in a single layer on a lined baking sheet and freeze until solid. Once they're frozen, transfer them to an airtight container or freezer bag with parchment between layers of the cookie dough. Store in the freezer for up to 2-3 months. When you're ready to bake, remove the desired amount from the freezer and let them thaw on the countertop at room temperature for an hour or two or in the fridge overnight. Once thawed, roll in powdered sugar and then bake as directed.
