Ingredients

  • 3 oz pepperoni
  • ½ cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 tsp garlic (minced)
  • ½ tsp Italian seasoning
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 1 lb mild Italian sausage
  • 24 oz marinara sauce
  • cups mozzarella cheese (shredded)
  • Breadsticks or sourdough bread slices for serving

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400℉.
  • Add ricotta cheese, garlic, Italian seasoning, and black pepper in a medium bowl. Mix until well combined and set aside.
  • Over medium-high heat in an oven-safe skillet. Cook the sausage until completely browned. Drain off excess grease.
  • Reduce heat to low and add marinara sauce. Simmer for 5 minutes and then top with dollops of ricotta cheese mixture. Sprinkle half of the cheese over the sauce. Then top with half of the pepperoni and repeat.
  • Bake for 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Serve with breadsticks, tortilla chips, or sliced sourdough pieces, and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use an oven-safe skillet. This way you can use the skillet to prep, bake, and serve the dip so there's less to clean up! A cast-iron skillet or stainless steel skillet are great options.
  • Drain the sausage. The Italian sausage is quite greasy so make sure you drain it very well before moving on with the rest of the recipe. I prefer to pour it into a strainer and let it sit until there's no more dripping.
  • Finish with a Broil. This is optional but is the easiest way to achieve a beautifully browned and bubbly cheese topping. Keep a close eye on it to prevent burning, as broiling can quickly turn the cheese golden and gooey.
  • Use Block Cheese. For the best texture, buy a block of cheese and grate your own!
